Little Gem Magnolia

Introduction

This cultivar of Southern Magnolia has a compact, upright growth habit of more typical multi-stemmed shrub than a single trunked tree. It grows at a slow rate to a height of 30-35 feet with an 8 to 12 foot spread and flowers at two or three years old. ‘Little Gem’ Magnolia forms a dense, dark green oval or pyramidal shape making it suited for screen or hedge planting.

Use and Management

The best quality for the Little Gem is its prolific flowering. This outstanding quality, combined with impressive foliage that is glossy green contrasted with bronze-brown pubescence makes Little Gem an ideal choice for landscape applications.

It is ideal for use an espalier and tall screening. It is also ideal to use in narrowly columned spaces that are typical for to days smaller, confined residential lots.

Planting

• Typically planted in 10, 15, 30, 45 or 65 gal containers.
• B&B trees are specified in height (6’ – 8’ ht, etc) or caliper (3” cal., etc)
• Container trees can be double the price of B&B trees
• Plant container trees in late summer, if price allows
• Plant B&B trees if they were dug and cured in the winter months
