Leyland Cypress

Introduction

A rapidly growing evergreen when young, Leyland Cypress will easily from three to four feet per year and will ultimately attain a height of 50 feet or more. Leyland quickly outgrows its space in small landscapes and is too big for many residential landscapes unless regularly trimmed. Leyland Cypress should probably be saved for large-scale landscapes where it can be allowed to develop into its natural shape.

Use and Management

Leyland Cypress grows in full sun on a wide range of soils, but looks best on moderately fertile soil with sufficient moisture. It will withstand severe pruning.

Leyland’s are the most popular privacy tree and grows very fast and thickens to create a solid wall. Its feathery texture is soft to the touch and stays green year-round, giving complete privacy.

Planting

• · Typically planted in 10, 15, 30, 45 or 65 gal containers.
• B&B trees are specified in height (6’ – 8’ ht, etc) or caliper (3” cal., etc)
• Container trees can be double the price of B&B trees
• Plant container trees in late summer, if price allows
• Plant B&B trees if they were dug and cured in the winter months
